Economy & industry overview
Argentina is a large upper-middle-income economy in South America with a nominal GDP of approximately $640 billion in 2025, driven by agriculture, energy, and services. The country holds the world's second-largest shale gas reserves and fourth-largest shale oil reserves, concentrated in the Vaca Muerta formation, which recorded crude oil production of over 860,000 barrels per day by late 2025 and generated a record energy trade surplus of $7.8 billion. The administration of President Javier Milei, which took office in December 2023, implemented a sharp fiscal adjustment program that reduced the budget deficit from roughly 5% of GDP to near zero, contributing to a GDP rebound of approximately 4.4% in 2025 after a severe contraction in 2024. Argentina is also the world's third-largest lithium reserve holder and a leading global exporter of soybeans, soybean meal, corn, and beef. Inflation, which peaked above 200% annually in mid-2024, declined sharply to approximately 117% for the full year 2025, though remained structurally elevated by global standards.

Local broker access
Direct access to the BYMA exchange for foreign retail investors is limited among major global brokers. Interactive Brokers does not offer direct BYMA trading for most retail accounts as of early 2026. Saxo Bank similarly does not list Argentine domestic equities. The most practical route for international investors to access Argentine equities is through NYSE/Nasdaq-listed ADRs (which are tradeable at any US broker) or the ARGT single-country ETF. Local Argentine brokers registered with the CNV — such as Bull Market Brokers, Invertir Online (IOL), Balanz Capital, and Allaria — do offer domestic BYMA access; foreigners with valid identification and tax registration (CUIL/CDI number) can generally open accounts at these local brokers, though documentation requirements and onboarding timelines vary. The CNV website (www.cnv.gob.ar) maintains a public registry of authorized brokers.

Relocation & residency
Investment visa / residency programme
Grants Temporary residency (renewable; path to permanent residency)
Argentina enacted a Citizenship by Investment framework under Decree 524/2025 (July 2025), making it the first South American country to offer direct citizenship in exchange for qualifying investment. The Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programs (APCI), under the Ministry of Economy, oversees the program. Qualifying sectors include renewable energy, agribusiness, technology, tourism, and infrastructure. A minimum investment threshold of approximately $500,000 USD in government-approved projects has been cited; the exact minimum was pending final regulatory publication as of early 2026. Applications were expected to open in late 2025 or early 2026 pending finalization of implementing regulations. Processing is required to be completed within 30 business days once applications are accepted. Prior Argentine residency is not required.
Minimum investment: $500.00K

Foreign-investor access
Argentina generally does not restrict foreign ownership of shares in Argentine companies. Under Law No. 21.382 (Foreign Investment Law) and subsequent regulations, foreign investors have the same rights as local investors for capital markets purposes, though historically currency controls (the so-called 'cepo cambiario') have restricted repatriation of dividends and capital. Argentina lifted most foreign exchange restrictions in April 2025, including those on dividend repatriation. Exceptions to open ownership apply to broadcasting (limited to 30% foreign ownership), aviation, and rural land (foreigners may not collectively own more than 15% of total rural land in any jurisdiction). A foreign resident wishing to invest locally can open a brokerage account (cuenta comitente) at an Argentine broker registered with the CNV (Comisión Nacional de Valores), the securities regulator, by presenting a valid passport, proof of address, and tax identification. Alternatively, many Argentine ADRs and the ARGT ETF can be accessed through any standard international brokerage account without the need for a local account.
